Writing and language teach us that the eyes are the gateway to the soul. Films illustrate that the gaze of the eyes can convey a lot.
The paintings of Adam Gabriel remind us of the validity of these insights.
Who looks at us from his canvases? The anonymous figures, whose gazes inevitably capture our own, communicate much in their own silent way. Adam Gabriels was born in 1967 on Guadeloupe, French Caribbean. His clear fascination is man; the naked vulnerable person.
Who are we? The starting point for this is the face. The powerful brushstrokes and precise lines reveal no obvious emotion, but insist on the viewer’s full attention. The existential focal point of the works is an open meeting with man, and perhaps we can recognize ourselves in the inevitable, strong gazes of the nameless figures.
