Zhang learned calligraphy at an early age, inspired by private lessons from the best practitioners in Tianjin. Despite being imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution, he developed his own style and later taught at Capital University in Beijing. Since 1992, Zhang lived alternately in Beijing and Tasmania, where nature inspired him to further explore abstract lines.
Sadly, Zhang Dawo passed away in May 2023, but his art will live on to inspire future generations. His paintings are characterized by bold, curved lines that bring movement and dynamism to the works. Bold brushstrokes and vivid textures add depth and complexity, while Zhang explored the interplay of rigor and freedom. His works create emotional resonance and visual intensity through the use of highly diluted ink and bold hues. Solid black lends his paintings a reassuring solidity.
Zhang’s art combines traditional calligraphy with contemporary abstract expressionism and draws inspiration from nature. His works explore themes of spirituality, humanism and harmony, with geometric forms creating order in the chaos of life. This unique fusion of ancient techniques and modern approaches shows how art connects people across cultures.
Zhang Dawo’s works are internationally recognized and part of important collections, including the British Museum in London.
