Hou Guabin is a versatile artist whose sculptural work has developed into an independent and innovative system. Since the beginning of his career, he has been able to take advantage of popular culture while addressing irony-free, profound themes. His works show a deliberate departure from the traditional principles of sculpture, which are often characterized by sacredness, solemnity, permanence and monumentality. Instead, Hou expresses a new kind of sculptural aesthetic that is vernacular, anti-elitist and humorously mocking.
His sculptures deliberately subvert the expectations of classical sculpture and offer an innovative perspective on form and content. Hou changes the traditional principles of creation and appreciation by utilizing different image sources and breaking down the classical conception of art.
In 1981, Hou Guabin began creating comic-style works, which laid the foundation for his later development. In 1997, he successfully completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Hebei Normal University. Just one year later, in 1998, he was appointed cartoonist for the American Oliver Cartoon.
His sculptural work was exhibited at the Art Base in Beijing in 2008. In the same year, his work “Female Lion” was purchased by Dr. Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, and his wife.
Other important milestones in Hou’s career include the inclusion of his work “Call back the spirit of the dead” in the *China Sculpture Yearbook Exhibition 2009* and his participation in the prestigious “Art Beijing Contemporary Art Fair” in 2011 as well as the fourth exhibition of the *International Youth Day Arts Festival* in Beijing.
Hou Guabin’s work represents a new generation of sculpture that breaks with tradition and at the same time has the ability to convey profound contemporary themes in an accessible and humorous way.
